- EU APPROVES DUMPING OF NUCLEAR WASTE IN AFRICA -

While writing the "west hugging" piece, I bumped into an article on Somali Piracy and figured, hey maybe anti-piracy is another positive aspect of the west. So I did a lot more research on the Piracy problem than usual... little did I know that I was in for a huge shock!!

Switzerland and Italy have been dumping TONNES OF DANGEROUS TOXIC WASTE (including ATOMIC WASTE) in East African waters for MORE THAN 20 YEARS! All this has been going on with the full knowledge and tacit approval of the western Governments.

Like many people, I always dismissed the Somali Pirates allegations of dumping and illegal trawling as mere gibberish to rationalize criminal activities... surely there would be a massive international outrage if it were real - right? WRONG!

The western Governments responsible for these crimes have been trying to distance themselves from the actions of the corporate entities involved - but the fact remains that TONNES OF NUCLEAR WASTE don't just move around without Governments being aware.

Somali people are getting symptoms that are consistent with radiation sickness. According to the UN, the entire Eastern African region is at risk. Kenyan Coastal people, for example, are particularly at risk due to their proximity to dump sites. It wont be long before we start hearing of birth deformities and unexplained increase in cancer etc.

Just thinking about it is sickening. What kind of human being would do such a thing to innocent people? Taking advantage of a crisis to commit the worst evils imaginable. What other evils have been meted on Africans without their knowledge?

1. Isn't this wilful illegal dumping of dangerous toxic material equivalent to crimes against humanity? One day the containers will leak (seems like some have started already) and there will be a catastrophe in East Africa.

2. What if terrorists get hold of the nuclear waste in Somalia for dirty bombs? Switzerland and Italy should be branded as state sponsors of terror and global Sanctions imposed against them.

3. What about the risks to ecosystems and people who depend on marine life?

4. What about the KENYAN COASTAL PEOPLE?

5. Somalis may be in the middle of civil war but they are still HUMAN BEINGS!!!!

6. Where is the noise making organ of the west? These dangerous inhumane activities have been highlighted by humanitarian agencies since the 1990s! Have you noticed that the west is always quiet whenever the issue of Peace/Stability in Somalia comes up? They say that Somalia is used to train terrorists - yet they do nothing about it... Like there is some big secret in Somalia that is a lot more risky to the west than terrorism? I was always puzzled by the paradox of it all...

Somali Pirates, it seems, are in fact innocent victims of organized criminal gangs that enjoy tacit EU support. The Pirates are the "good guys" - protecting East African coast from illegal and inhumane foreign criminal activities.

APPEAL TO EU, specifically Italy and Switzerland:
Please, if you abhore this evil committed by your citizens, please take action to arrest and jail those responsible, then clean up the toxic waste, apologise to the world and compensate the Somali and Kenyan coastal people. It's the least you can do to make genuine amends.

African Union must assert itself in the global arena by taking measures against these evil countries. At the very least there should be demands for cleanup and restitutions. Alternatively the costs for fixing the mess ourselves can be deducted from any debts owed to the guilty countries (or owed to the EU).

The African Union must shed its naivety and come to terms with the reality that some evil western governments see Africans as sub-humans. Such evil governments will not hesitate to commit mass murders or atrocitries against Africans - especially if they can do it in secret using biological (HIV / Ebola for example?) and chemical agents.

Believe me, if the dumping was done to a western country, like the USA, it would be seen as an act of terror or act of war and there would definitely be consequences.

GOD BLESS AFRICA!

Piracy is obviously a great danger but so is dumping. What is interesting is how the mainstream media has sensationalised the piracy saga (the same old stereotype of savage Africans) while no light is shed on the dumping. I hadn't even heard about this before reading it on your blog.

Does anyone have *evidence* that toxic dumping is/has really been happening in SPECIFICALLY on somalia waters? Even you provided no links to facts!

Just because some containers drift to coast doesn't mean anything. TOXIC WASTE DRIFTS TO ALL COASTS AROUND THE WORLD. Italians and Swiss? It is been done by criminals from all around the world.. Americans, Europians, Indians, Chinese - and Africans! EU or any other goverment most certainly doesn't approve it!

The "go to somalia to dump toxics" theory doesn't make any sense in first place, why would they go all they way to somalia. Why not just go to the middle of atlantic or pacific, much less changes that the contair drifts to anyones coast...

Yes, dumping toxic wastes to the oceans is WRONG. But there is no evidence that it happens more in somalias cost than elsewhere. If it as common as pirates claim...

...Surely some toxic dumping ship would have been got by the pirates already?

The only illegal thing uncovered by pirates so far where the South Sudan tanks abroad mv Faina. No toxic dumpers, no illegal fishing vessels.

Good article.
Under normal circumstances I never comment on blogs, but, there are exceptions to the rule… I dislike ignorance especially 'informed ignorance'.
Before I delve into the topic at hand, I would encourage you (the reader) to sit down and quietly listen to this young lady and carefully think of how we (especially Africans) come to draw conclusions or draw up opinions on issues especially if our news sources are identical to those of the west. Watching CNN or BBC does not make you informed. Reading international news in the local dailies (Nation, Kenya Times etc etc) does not make you informed, all our local dailies get their international news from the same sources i.e. Reuters, Associated Press and the like. My point is, do not be blinded by what is peddled out there… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9Ihs241zeg

On the issue of Somalia some of us were a little perplexed as to why and how the issue of pirates came to be so major and why was it being heavily reported, yes, we did cheer all the warships heading to the coast and blasting these wahrias out of the water. Well, the only time such an area becomes a news article is when there a vested interests at stake, yes, from the mega oil tankers etc etc I leave it to you to figure the rest out or rather do the research rather than believe what is being peddled

@ANON 1:
I too was shocked by the truth and the amount of coverup and lies in news reports.

@ANON 2:
1. Interesting how you refute the claims, then rationalize dumping by saying "hey, look, everyone does it so what's the big deal?".

2. Show us the evidence of India, China and Africa dumping toxic waste in Africa.

3. There is proof of the Somalia dumping. This proof has been submitted to the UN & Greenpeace.

@ANON 3: Couldn't agree more. Global politics = global deception. Those who control the media control the world.

@ALL:
There is inreasing speculation that the "new species" being discovered at sea with increasing frequency are mutations resulting from nuclear waste radiation effect on genetics.

Apparently the "new species" / accelerated evolution concept (from the west of course) is a smokescreen to prevent alarm should people find out the truth...

Not 20 years.. 30+years of dumping toxic waste. Systematic and sustained crimes against humanity deliberately meted on Africans:

"The dumping of toxic waste materials poses a grave environmental threat to African people, many of whom are not aware of the dangers and are not equipped to handle the ensuing consequences."

http://www1.american.edu/TED/oauwaste.htm

More..
"During the Somali civil war hazardous waste was dumped in this African nation by industrialized countries. The alleged perpetrators were Italian and Swiss firms who supposedly entered into a contract with the Somali government to dump waste in the war ravaged African nation.

The issue of dumping in Somalia is two fold in that it is both a legal question and a moral question.

First, is there a violation of international treaties in the export of hazardous waste to Somalia.

Second, is it ethically questionable to negotiate a hazardous waste disposal contract with a country in the midst of a protracted civil war and with a government that can best be described as tenuous and factionalized?"

Nick Nuttall, Senior UNEP Official:
"Somalia has been used as a dumping ground for hazardous waste starting in the early 1990s, and continuing through the civil war there," he said.

"European companies found it to be very cheap to get rid of the waste, costing as little as $2.50 a tonne, where waste disposal costs in Europe are something like $1000 a tonne.

And the waste is many different kinds. There is URANIUM RADIOACTIVE WASTE. There is LEAD, and heavy metals like CADMIUM and MERCURY. There is also industrial waste, and there are hospital wastes, chemical wastes – you name it."

Nuttall also said that since the containers came ashore, hundreds of residents have fallen ill, suffering from mouth and abdominal bleeding, skin infections and other ailments.

Coverup / assasinations example:

"...The environmental activist’s work proved difficult when it came clear these companies dumping the waste and their criminal partners in Somalia are also serious to take out anyone who challenges them. Early 1990’s when the story broke an Italian television journalist named Ilaria Alpi soon took up the investigation.

But in 1994, Ms. Alpi and her cameraman were “assassinated” while traveling in Somalia. Some argue her death was set as an example by the mafia controlling this lucrative immoral and illegal activities.

The journalist, Ms. Alpi, had been investigating allegations that Mafia-run companies in ITALY were regularly transporting industrial waste to Somalia for dumping.

The organized crime group is estimated to control about 30 percent of Italy’s waste disposal companies, including those that deal with toxic waste.

Tons and Tons of proof of these crimes against humanity... Africa has been under attack from the west for centuries now. And it still continues.

Africa leaders are partially to blame for being complacent and putting their people - including UNBORN CHILDREN - in serious danger.

THE FACTS (Feel free to crosscheck and confirm):

* Inspections of 18 European ports in 2005 found that 47 per cent of all waste destined for export was in fact illegal. (Greenpeace)

* In 1993, there were two million tons of waste crossing the globe. By 2001, it had risen to 8.5 million. (UN)

* UK households throw away 93 million pieces of electrical equipment a year - about four items per household. Many of these end up in West Africa, India or China. (Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling)

* There are more than 20 million redundant mobile phones in the UK. (Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling)

* It is illegal to ship hazardous waste out of Europe, but old electronic items can be sent to developing countries for "recycling". (Defra)

Is'nt the fish in the sea be contaminated? Won't the people who eat it become very sick???

Who is responsible for the cleaning up of the sea? Are the Somalians to do it or the African's? Do'nt think the waste originated there. Why is'nt there any feeling of wrong having been done? Even now, when it has become clear what the reason for the piracy is, can't anyone do the right thing? Can't the so called POWERS, stop the dumping of toxic waste in the seas. Pass legislation.
